Smart Ranking

The SearchStax Site Search solution’s Smart Ranking feature uses Artificial Intelligence to reorder search results to better match the intent of the user’s query.

Smart Reranking reorders the final results list after applying all other filtering, ranking, and boosting features. It leaves promotions at the top of the list.

How Does It Work?

A user asked Site Search, “How does spell check differ from other features?” Using Solr’s keyword matching, Solr returned a doc page about the Spell Check feature, followed by a Help Center essay comparing Spell Check with another feature.

Since the user’s intent was to compare features, the purely keyword-driven response had missed the point. When enabled, the Smart Ranking feature reordered the search results to put the comparison essay first.

Note that the query must express intent before Smart Ranking can respond to it. Queries formed of phrases, sentences, or questions give the system more information to analyze.

Evaluating Smart Ranking

How can you evaluate Smart Ranking in your environment?

Smart Ranking moves more desirable result items to the top of the list, making them more visible to the user. Look for changes in analytics data before and after enabling the feature. The impact of Smart Ranking might appear as:

  • Decrease in average Click Position. Smart Ranking puts more attractive results at the top of the list.
  • Increase in Click-Through Rate. Smart Ranking makes desirable results more likely to be found and selected.
