The SearchStax Site Search Synonyms feature lets users upload a CSV or TXT file of synonym pairs. The upload files require different formats, detailed here.
CSV Upload Format
The easy way to create a synonym upload file in CSV format is to edit it in Excel or some equivalent spreadsheet.
If you are working in a text editor, the values must be separated by commas. Any value containing commas must be quoted.
The spreadsheet uses three columns (A, B, C).
- Row 1 is a heading: Word | Is | Synonym.
- After Row 1, column A is a word or phrase that will trigger a synonym expansion.
- After Row 1, column B must be a right-arrow (→) or a double-arrow (↔). Otherwise the upload will be aborted.
- The right-arrow indicates a one-way synonym. A implies C.
- The double-arrow indicates a symmetrical synonym. A implies C, and C implies A.
- After Row 1, column C is the synonym(s) that will used in addition to the trigger in column A. If this is a symmetrical synonym, both columns A and C are triggers that expand each other.
TXT Upload Format
The TXT upload format is generally the same as the CSV format, with the following differences.
- There is no heading row. Row 1 is the first synonym entry.
- There are no commas except for those within quoted strings in column C.
When you update synonyms in Site Search, remember to scroll down the screen and Publish them.
