For July’s partner spotlight, we’re showcasing Velir, a SearchStax Gold partner based in the United States, which is dedicated to creating digital experiences that connect people and elevate brands. To describe itself, Velir developed the phrase “Human Digital” to represent the intersection of technology and humanity at the company’s core as well as its commitment to keeping the human beings using technology at the forefront of everything it does.

We spoke with Maris Hanson, Chief Operating Officer at Velir about this concept and how it affects the company’s approach to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI):

Velir’s main focus has always been on people. This means they are constantly considering the unique perspective of the human beings accessing technology and creating digital experiences that actually fulfill the needs and wants of those people on a personal level. This was the inspiration for “Human Digital.”

Maris explained that as a consultancy, Velir’s main product, and most important asset is its people and the diversity of experiences they bring to their work. It became a priority for the company to open up spaces and create the right culture to embrace this diversity and the unique perspective of each employee. Velir does that by fostering a supportive environment that allows every person to have successful interactions with each other.

To achieve this, Velir counts on the guidance of Sharon Bueno Washington, DEI Coach and Consultant, who hosts workshops on dialogue skills, navigating difficult conversations, exploring power and privilege, and effective teaming. She cultivates Velir’s team with the necessary tools to establish a safe environment for everyone to connect on a deeper, more meaningful level.

This commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is what sets Velir apart from other organizations. Taking those conversations to the next level and actually translating them into actions and strategies is what allows it to build a safer, more effective workplace for all.

Three Mantras for Fostering Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

We asked Maris to share with us three mantras that any company should keep in mind when pursuing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion practices.

  1. It’s a work in progress. Don’t expect to get it right the first time and be prepared to listen to the feedback, assess what is being done on a regular basis, and pivot when needed. This is not a one-and-done initiative.
  2. Get creative. Think outside the box and create spaces that allow the team to have a meaningful conversation about these critical topics from their own unique perspectives.
  3. Be vulnerable. Embrace those difficult conversations and encourage everyone, from the leadership down, to share their thoughts and experiences surrounding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Only then can real progress be made.
