Announcing updates to Solr backup and restore features for improved operational agility.

Greater Reliability and Operational Uptime

Solr backups are crucial but can be tricky to handle reliably when managing your own Solr infrastructure. SearchStax Managed Search provides Solr data management via backups of deployments or specific collections as well as restore capabilities of full or partial backups.

From an incident management perspective, these tools have been at the core of our offering, but some users have still been seeking to further increase the speed and availability of their applications. So we made back ups and restorations even faster and more reliable for our Managed Search Solr customers – especially larger users with high search volume and larger datasets.

What's New?

1. More Reliable Backups for Large Datasets

  • Backup process resiliency is increased by adding elastic timeout settings for larger datasets. Anyone managing hundreds of Gigabytes in Solr knows that backups can be finicky, but SearchStax backups analyze the collection directories upfront and take snapshots with optimized parameters based on each collection’s attributes.

2. Faster Restoration Times

  • Backup restoration is generally done in a sequential manner for good reason. Let’s say you have multiple collections for multiple client applications on the same cluster. You may want to restore only one or a specific set of collections while leaving the remaining in their current state. In these scenarios, you’ll want to backup in a sequential manner to avoid overloading the system, and thus affecting the other collections’ performance. But what if you want to do a full overwrite? In this scenario you are most likely facing downtime due to sudden data corruption, so having a low recovery time objective becomes critical. Now you can initiate backup restore operations that recover collections in a synchronous manner, dramatically reducing downtime for multi-collection deployments such as multi-tenant application architectures or Sitecore CMS.

Why This Matters

For many customers this might feel like table stakes features required for providing reliability and availability of the Solr service, but other use cases proactively benefit from these features, including Blue/Green deployment strategies or managing multi-tenant architectures.

For whichever use case you might have, SearchStax’s recently made improvements to backup and restore capabilities help to further increase your operational agility.
